Japanese Acupuncture in the UK
Japanese Acupuncture is a collective title for styles of treatment that are typically more gentle, sometimes non-insertion techniques that are rooted in classical acupuncture theory. The traditions that insert needles are often very fine sterile needles and are inserted using guide-tubes which were first introduced in Japan. Often palpation or touch precedes needling and the emphasis is on minimal intervention or gentle/shallow needling. The development of palpation and diagnosis of the condition of qi through touch and validation of changes through further palpation comes from the tradition of blind practitioners in ancient Japan. In addition, there is the general acceptance of specific tools used to rub, scratch or tap the body or to stimulate qi in replacement of the traditional needle.
Popular styles of Japanese Acupuncture Practised today in the UK include:
- Yin Yang Balancing (Manaka Style)
- Toyohari
- Kiiko Matsumoto
- Kampo (Japanese Herbal Medicine)
- Yamamoto New Scalp Acupuncture
- Masakazu Ikeda Sensei
- Shonishin

JAMA Affinity Insurance Scheme
The Japanese Acupuncture and Moxibustion Association have partnered with Balens Specialist Insurance Brokers to provide our members with a bespoke Affinity Scheme Insurance Policy. This scheme specifically covers acupuncture and related therapies. We are now one of the only groups who can insure you for blood-letting as well as semi-permanent acupuncture needles such as ASP/ and press needles. This policy also includes automatic cover for many adjunct therapies such as cupping and Gua Sha.
When discussing your insurance cover with Balens, it is important that you inform them that you are part of the BAF Insurance Affinity Scheme. Being a member of JAMA means you are also a member of BAF.
Thank you so much to the JAMA and BAF for setting up the pay as you go clinical waste contract. I have saved over £100 and I can have my bin emptied when I need it and not when the contractor decides.
